The Charrua Hotel chain reached the southern states of the country. Created by the Ipiranga group, it focused on Rio Grande do Sul, opening the Hotel Charrua Rio Grande in Rio Grande in the mid-1960s. In 1970, the chain decided to expand its structure, increasing its capacity from 90 apartments to 156 apartments.In the 1980s, the Ipiranga group lost interest in diversification and focused its activities on oil. The last hotel in the Charrua chain, the Charrua Rio Grande Hotel, was sold to the Guanabara Group in 1990. The group had already been operating in the hotel sector since the end of the 1980s with the traditional hotel on Cassino beach, the Hotel Atlântico.From the year 2000 onwards, it replaced the Charrua brand and became known as Hotel Atlântico Rio Grande and Hotel Atlântico Praia.Due to a long period without maintenance on its facilities, the Hotel Atlântico Rio Grande has embarked on a long process of modernization and renovation. 154 apartments have been renovated, all the plumbing and water heating systems have been replaced, elevators and equipment (televisions, minibars, mattresses, etc.) have been replaced, in addition to modernizing the Comodoro Restaurant and the communication and computerization systems.
